Did you know that the Italian word 'vespa' simply means 'wasp'? Because the special design, the handlebar and the unique buzzing sound are reminiscent of a wasp, the scooter got its name. Although the Vespa has been available in various colors and designs in recent years, the overall design has always remained true to its classic look and wasp-like shape.
LEGO 10298 Vespa: what is that actually?
Back in time: the history of the iconic Vespa 125
The Vespa is not only a vehicle, but also an accessory. The scooter is practical, stylish and loved worldwide by people with a passion for traveling in style.
Whether you are in a remote village in Vietnam or in the middle of one of the bustling squares in Rome, you will encounter this iconic two-wheeler everywhere. With its timeless charm, this vehicle has been bringing generations and cultures together for years. Actually just like LEGO® bricks. The great thing is that you can now FINALLY make your own LEGO replica of the classic Vespa 125. How cool is that! In honor of this great new set and cool collaboration, we delve into the history of this iconic Italian scooter. Are you also curious how this two-wheeler has become an inseparable part of everyday culture and style?
What is a Vespa?
Since you are reading this article, you probably know what a Vespa is, but just for the sake of completeness: a scooter indeed! What you may not have known is that the Vespa 125 owes its name to the 125 cc engine that powers the vehicle. And it is exactly this classic speed devil from the 1960s that our LEGO® set is based on. The scooter has a long history full of successes and has been transporting Italian style to all corners of the world for 75 years. The model in this set has a fresh light blue color and the engine is clearly visible so that you can view all realistic features in detail.
Who are the inventors of the Vespa?
It was the Piaggio brothers who created the Vespa. Although the brothers and their families all worked in the aviation industry, after World War II the two decided to focus on providing safe and affordable transportation for all Italians. They therefore focused entirely on scooters (instead of aircraft) and in 1946 they applied for the patent for the first Vespa. The scooter was a practical and affordable way to get around the city, and the vehicle gave residents a sense of freedom and joy that they had not experienced in a long time due to the war. In other words: the perfect symbol of a bright future. In no time, the two-wheeler became an indispensable part of the street scene, because it was the perfect way for Italian commuters to maneuver through traffic. And that still applies today.
Which country does the Vespa come from?
Italy! The Vespa was born in Pontedera, a town in the province of Pisa, Tuscany. Piaggio's headquarters are still there, although there are now a number of production locations in other places around the world. If you are ever in the area and want to know everything about the history of the Vespa, you can visit the Piaggio Museum in Pontedera. In honor of this iconic vehicle, our LEGO® replica includes numerous authentic features, such as a folding kickstand, working steering wheel and even a charming basket. This way, while building, you can imagine yourself under the Tuscan sun with a freshly baked roll and surrounded by flowers.
A vehicle for everyone!
In the 1960s, the Vespa became extremely popular among women. It was the ideal way to travel easily, safely and in style. Moreover, the scooter completely matched the carefree spirit of this decade. The two-wheeler quickly became a fashion statement and a symbol of independence and empowerment. The pastel blue color was completely hip at the time and it was the only color in which the Vespa 125 was available at the time. If you had a Vespa, a vintage helmet could of course not be missing from your look. It will therefore not surprise you that this brick LEGO® version of the scooter also includes a buildable helmet. In the past ten years, almost 2 million Vespas have hit the road on different continents. They are there for everyone, no matter who or what you are.
What does the word Vespa mean?
What's so special about the Vespa?
The Vespa has a special place in the hearts of many people. Maybe the scooter reminds you of that great holiday or the laps you rode on it with your grandfather or another family member. Or does the two-wheeler play an important role in your favorite film? There are countless reasons why the Vespa 125 is so special for many. Although some Vespas are safely stored in the garages of Hollywood stars, the scooter is also an inseparable part of the everyday lives of ordinary people. Does the Vespa also have a special place in your heart? Then add the LEGO® Vespa 125 scooter to your collection and show off this stylish, timeless and unique eye-catcher.
