LEGO Ideas: Another five designs will be selected for judging

In the week of February 5 to 11, 2024, five designs on LEGO Ideas managed to collect the necessary 10,000 votes. The designs include two spaceships, two tracks and a touring stage. With the votes collected, the five models qualify as the 13th through 17th designs for the first judging phase in 2024 and are now awaiting a review from the LEGO Ideas Designer Team and perhaps sold on LEGO Store shelves in the future . Let's take a closer look at the five builds!

Interstellar

Facts about the design

  • Title: Interstellar
  • Fan Designer: Minibrick Productions
  • Days: 147
  • Minifigures: 2
  • Number of parts: 532

With the Ranger from the movie Interstellar you can now explore space from home. Christopher Nolan's 2014 science fiction film Interstellar is set in a dystopian future in which humanity must leave Earth. With the legendary spaceship Ranger, Cooper and Dr. Brand is on his way to find a new home on another planet.

The LEGO replica of the Ranger can be opened and closed via the tailgate. The roof can also be removed for better access. Inside there is room for two minifigures of Cooper and Dr. Fire and the two robots TARS and CASE.

The model would make a great LEGO Ideas set due to its size and number of pieces, if it wasn't a movie model. I think that since this is a replica from the movie Interstellar, it will be much more difficult to realize this spaceship due to rights. The model also looks very similar to the LEGO City 60430 Spaceship. So I don't think the Ranger will be realized as an Ideas Set.

overhead track

Facts about the design

  • Title: Working suspension railway
  • Fan Designer: Baron von Barron
  • Days: 64
  • Minifigures: 7
  • Number of parts: 2,999
  • Dimensions: 78 cm x 54 cm x 22 cm

I find the many details of the overhead track downright impressive. This set would look good in a LEGO city. The Wuppertal overhead track was rejected, but this model is not only more detailed but also fully functional. But we should not forget that almost all train models, apart from the famous 21344 Orient Express, were rejected. The suspension railway will have a hard time with this. But I wouldn't completely rule out its implementation.

Metallica world tour

Facts about the design

  • Title: Metallica M72 WorldTour
  • Fan Designer: MetalliBrick
  • Days: 85
  • Minifigures: 4
  • Number of parts: 2,972
  • Dimensions: approx. 50 x 45 x 40 cm

The M72 World Tour has been recreated on a 48x48 baseplate. In the center is the round stage, which consists of several levels. Outside there are towers with large screens broadcasting the show. The set contains everything a great concert has to offer: microphones, stage lighting, various spotlights, pyro, the set lists, some chairs and the most important thing! The band itself and nothing else matters! Lars Ulrich on drums, James Hetfield on guitar, Kirk Hammett on lead guitar and Robert Trujillo on bass.

The special thing about the M72 tour is that the concert takes place over two days. This is an absolute highlight not only for the fans but also for the band. I think the replica is a great set for all fans, but I'm not sure LEGO would replicate a set. I don't think we'll get the stage as a backdrop. But a little tip, if you want to see Metallica more often (again): Metallica will play in Munich in May this year!

Suitcase Express

Facts about the design

  • Title: Suitcase Express!
  • Fan Designer: UsualBuilder
  • Days: 518
  • Minifigures: 0
  • Number of parts: 2,988
  • Dimensions: 33.4 cm x 27.1 cm x 16.3 cm

Everyone aboard! Welcome to KofferExpress! At first glance this suitcase seems quite ordinary, but when you open it the real magic begins. Inside the suitcase is an amazing experience with a train that rushes along the rails in a magical world and is never late! There is a whole landscape on a conveyor belt to be discovered. All you have to do is turn the handle on the lock and there's a moving train in the case!

The very similar Travel Suitcase reached the third review phase in 2022. Both suitcases look very similar on the outside and inside. The only difference is that the Suitcase Express has a roller conveyor function, which makes the landscape move through the suitcase. I don't think the idea is bad, but I'm not sure if the model has a chance.

Outer Wilds

Facts about the design

  • Title: Outer Wilds
  • Fan Designer: Minibrick Productions
  • Days: 48
  • Minifigures: 1
  • Number of parts: 1,190

Based on the popular game Outer Wilds, you can now go on missions with the spaceship at home. The LEGO set consists of the spaceship, the main character, a campfire, a representation of Timber Hearth and various accessories such as the Nomai language translator and Little Scout!

The spacecraft features a complete interior that is easily accessible by removing the roof and opening the cockpit windshield. Inside you will find the computer, generator and gravity crystal, as well as the cockpit in which the main character can be placed. Also included are various spaceship attachments, such as the blue light beam and flame parts that can be attached to the engines.

The Outer Wilds spaceship made it into the review a year ago, but was subsequently rejected. It is nothing new that many NASA and space models are always well received and often end up in the LEGO range. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for game models, because they are not just licensed models, but usually only appeal to a small target group. Therefore, I assume that this design will also be rejected.
